On my FaceBook page I recently asked: Will you be working this weekend?

The responses were:

  • I’m working away …. no time to rest! Well might go for a drink Sunday night …. fingers crossed …
  • Switch off? Rarely! the flexibility (of being a small business owner) is great but the lack of an off switch is a challenge! This has been even more so for me with ‘maternity leave’ – it isn’t really leave at all!

In the last two months I have taken one day off – yes terrible work life balance. Since I have run my own business even when I am on holiday I am checking in if there are matters I need to deal with.

I realise need automated processes in place to deal with holidays, and people in place who can simply pick up those processes and run with them. But when you are small, used to speaking with your clients on a personal basis, it is hard to step back, and hand them over to a generic process. They use the small business for the personalised service, rather than the large impersonal; you can deal with anyone here service you get from a large firm.
