June 30 approaches, and the pace never slackens.

  • Remember that all employers covered by the national workplace relations system (that’s almost all Australian businesses, unless you operate from Western Australia and are a sole trader or partnership) must now provide each new employee with a Fair Work Information Statement (the Statement) before, or as soon as possible after, the employee starts employment. You should also check all employee awards, as many workplace hourly rates and employment conditions are set to change on July 1.
  • Don’t forget that there’s new legislation this year regarding payment summaries and reportable superannuation. You can download an online guide to end-of-year-payroll, explaining how to balance payroll accounts, set up payment summaries, and check that your payment summaries are correct, all using your MYOB software This document comes complete with a June 30 checklist.
  • Also available is a e-book about Managing Employee Superannuation, available online for only $9.95.
  • Have you recently upgraded your version of QuickBooks or MYOB? I’ve written free updates that cover the new features of both MYOB AccountRight and the 2010 release of QuickBooks. You’re welcome to download these documents from my website, free of charge. Click here for the MYOB AccountRight update, or click here for the QuickBooks update.
  • I also have a new page at my website listing add-ons for QuickBooks. Click here to find out more.

But the biggest news of all (at least, for me it is!) is the release of my new title, Bookkeeping For Dummies. This book has been a real labour of love for myself and for my New Zealand co-author Lynley Averis. We’ve tried to think of all the things we’ve found tricky as bookkeepers, or that we know are frequent problems for the bookkeepers that we train. Maybe you muddle your debits and credits, need help journaling depreciation, you’re not sure how to balance payroll accounts, or you want strategies to help you understand financial reports. We’ve tried to cover it all, and I must say that we’re feeling pretty proud of the result. You can read more by clicking here.

Thanks, as always, for your support, and good luck with the end-of-year silly season!
