I recently dropped my car off at Hoppy’s Car Wash and walked across the road for a stroll thru the Balmoral Cemetery in Norman Park. It is the first time I can recall walking thru the cemetery. It is a prime piece of real estate in a really bad condition. Sadly many of the headstones, are broken in some way. I am not sure if it is due to vandals, or Australia’s harsh environment. I know I have not witnessed such devastation in English cemeteries.
From Di Farmer’s email:
If you’re interested in the history of our local area, the Balmoral Cemetery Open Day is the place to be on Sunday 22 August. Reading the names as you walk past the graves is like reading the street directory of our local area – all the names of our first families, of our local soldiers who went away to war, even some famous politicians! The cemetery is well looked after by the enthusiastic Friends of Balmoral Cemetery group, who’ve collected some wonderful stories about the occupants of the graves. They will hold guided tours and talks from 9 am on the 22nd, to showcase just how important the cemetery is to our local history. For more information, phone Betty Sinden, on 3395 7916.
